Green Cap Observation

Standing for the First Amendment

Welcome to Green Cap Observation!

The First Amendment is not first by chance. Help us protect it!

We are a group of dedicated volunteers who stand for peaceful assembly and the right to petition the government – free from harassment. We also support every group’s freedom of  expression, affirming their right to gather peacefully without discriminatory harassment or interference.

Our Mission

We serve as the eyes and ears of our community, documenting any infringement on First Amendment rights. We are local to Charlottesville, Virginia – local volunteers serving local citizens.

Through our volunteers, we:

  • Monitor public events for violations of constitutional rights.
  • De-escalate, if we deem appropriate.
  • Report incidents to authorities, if physical confrontations occur or opposing groups must be separated.

Safety and Protocols:

  • Volunteer safety is a priority. We follow strict safety protocols.
  • We do not engage physically.
  • We record incidents only when violence or misconduct occurs.
  • We stay in constant communication via radio.
  • All volunteers wear distinctive green cap – not to stand out, but to stay visible to each other for safety and coordination.
  • We carry small body cameras to document situations as needed.

Why the the Green Cap?

Yes, we wear green – but we don’t aim to be the center of attention. The green cap serves a practical purpose:

  • It helps volunteers identify one another in a crowd.
  • It reinforces accountability within our team.
  • It signals peaceful observation – not participation (we are not associated with the National Lawyers Guild)

Now is the time to protect freedoms. We believe in action through presence. Now more than ever, it’s time to stand up – calmly, clearly, and together – for the First Amendment.

Volunteering with Us

Who Can Volunteer?

Everyone is welcome. Inclusivity makes our group strong and vibrant. And fun! If you believe in peaceful observation and constitutional rights, there’s a place for you here.

What’s Expected of Volunteers?

  • Dedication to our mission and safety guidelines
  • A time commitment of 2-4 hours per event
  • Observation only – volunteers do not participate in the events they monitor
  • A calm, non-confrontational presence
  • Readiness to document and report issues as needed
  • Joining the SIGNAL messaging system, and respond to calls to action, if available
